Position Summary

The position will focus on the design, manufacturing and testing of sensors for tire-soil interactions in autonomous all-terrain vehicles. The position is available for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon availability of funding. The person chosen will be part of a diverse and highly collaborative research group at Michigan State University led by Dr. Lajnef.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop sensors for soil characterization and tire-soil interactions in autonomous all-terrain vehicles.
  • Design and simulate mixed-signal circuits, including amplifiers, filters, and ADCs.
  • Design and develop PCB layouts and schematics using industry-standard software tools
  • Conduct experiments to validate the performance of the designed sensors and circuits.
  • Collaborate with geotechnical and mechanical engineers to integrate sensors into the autonomous vehicle platform.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences
  • Work with other researchers on the project to develop the next generation of autonomous military vehicles.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Electrical Engineering or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field with expertise in sensor design and implementation, and electronics and circuit design.
  • Experience with designing and testing sensors, PCBs, and mixed-signal circuits.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficient in using industry-standard software tools, such as Cadence, Altium, or Eagle for PCB design, and Matlab or SPICE for circuit simulation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or C++ is preferred.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

Department Statement

Civil and Environmental engineering is organized to create a welcoming/inclusive campus community for students by collaborating with faculty, staff and students to develop programs and resources that will support curricular and co-curricular success and to prepare students to succeed academically and professionally.

The CEE Department is centered around civil engineering and environmental engineering degree programs. Some specialized disciplines include structures, pavements, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, water resources, and energy/sustainability. The department currently has 28 tenure-system faculty members, with approximately 700 undergraduate and 145 graduate students. Degrees are offered at BS, MS, and PhD levels.
