Position Summary

Position Summary:

The Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University (https://education.msu.edu/kin) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in athletic training/sports medicine at the assistant, associate or full professor rank. We seek an exceptional candidate who will contribute to the department’s research and grant portfolio, demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students (CAATE-accredited master’s program in Athletic Training and Ph.D. program in Kinesiology), and actively engage in service to the institution, profession, and community. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through their research, teaching, and service are highly valued. This is a 9-month appointment with a start date of August 16, 2025.

Duties:

  • Establish and sustain a scholarly research program: Develop and engage in a research agenda of societal significance that aligns with the department's strengths, enhances its reputation, and aids in the recruitment of graduate students.
  • Seek and secure external funding: Obtain sufficient external funding to support ongoing and stable research activities.
  • Teach across all modes and levels: Deliver high-quality instruction in various formats and at all levels, focusing particularly on the Athletic Training program, and in areas aligned with expertise and departmental needs.
  • Recruit, advise, and mentor students: Actively engage in the recruitment, advising, and mentorship of master's and Ph.D. students.
  • Maintain CAATE accreditation: Perform necessary activities to uphold accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
  • Provide service: Contribute service relevant to the department, college, university, profession, and broader community.

Environment:

The Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University is one of the oldest in the United States, first established as the Department of Physical Culture in 1899. Today, kinesiology is one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus, with approximately 1,500 students. Our graduate programs total approximately 120 students, and our doctoral program in Kinesiology was recently ranked 11th in the United States in the evaluation of doctoral programs conducted by the National Academy of Kinesiology. All major areas of kinesiology are represented, including exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, motor control and learning, biomechanics, and athletic training. Minimum Requirements

Required Degree: Applicants should have earned a doctoral or equivalent terminal degree in Kinesiology or other relevant discipline (e.g., neuroscience, psychology, exercise science, medicine, engineering, biomechanics). They also must be able to obtain athletic training licensure in the state of Michigan.
 

Desired Qualifications

Post-doctoral experience is desirable. The successful candidate must:

(a) show evidence of significant scholarly accomplishment and potential for future accomplishment (e.g., publications, presentations),

(b) conduct research that has substantial potential for acquiring external funding, and

(c) demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students. Candidates applying for the rank of associate professor or professor must have strong evidence of “sustained, outstanding achievements in scholarship, teaching, and service” to merit tenure and the rank of associate professor or professor at Michigan State University, consistent with performance levels expected for promotion to associate professor or professor at peer universities (see https://hr.msu.edu/ua/hiring/faculty-academic-staff/granting-tenure-process.html).

  4. Teaching and Mentoring Statement: Provide a statement outlining your experience and future goals in teaching and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students. Include information about your efforts or plans to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for students.
  5. Professional References: Provide contact information for three individuals who have agreed to serve as professional references. These individuals should be able to attest to your professional integrity and collegiality. At least two should be knowledgeable about your current research and future plans, and at least one should be able to speak to your instructional experience and capabilities. Written letters of recommendation will be requested for candidates invited for interviews.
