Director of Finance

Position Summary

As an essential member of the College of Engineering Operations Team, the Director of Finance will hold a crucial role in overseeing the financial aspects of the College. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this position will assume a strategic position in managing the overall financial operations. This role involves daily management of financial activities within a large and intricate college environment encompassing academic and non-academic departments.

Key responsibilities include overseeing fiscal and budgetary activities, managing operational and special accounts, ensuring accurate financial recording and reporting, and conducting regular account reconciliations. Furthermore, the Director of Finance is tasked with responsibilities related to overseeing the budget process, monitoring expenses, and contributing to long-term financial forecasting. They will also participate in setting goals, policies, and procedures, as well as engaging in special projects such as project monitoring and supporting the implementation of college initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee financial analysis and budget management.
  • Direct fiscal activities of the college.
  • Lead the development and assessment of short and long-term financial objectives aligned with the College's strategic vision.
  • Implement procedures and systems to uphold accurate records and effective accounting controls.
  • Provide leadership, training, and guidance to departmental staff regarding budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions for multiple academic and non-academic units.
  • Optimize work processes, including tool development and training initiatives.
  • Collaborate on decision-making to address operational challenges while maintaining financial integrity.
  • Employ financial management tools and advocate for standardized processes consistent with organizational values.
  • Consult and collaborate with departmental administrators on budget planning and compliance with policies and procedures.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Accounting, Management or field related to employing unit; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial or accounting practices, developing research projects, funding and grant practices and/or experience in a field related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in strategic thinking, analytical skills, problem-solving, and attention to detail. They must have a proven track record in establishing procedures, implementing processes, and meeting deadlines.

Ability to carry out multiple projects and tasks simultaneously and independently; willingness and flexibility to accommodate and effectively support changing priorities and processes; employs excellent judgment; handles sensitive matters confidentially and discreetly; familiarity with the following: Microsoft 365 Suite, PowerBI, financial reporting and research administration; able to effectively collaborate with individuals across all levels of the College and the MSU community.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate outstanding leadership and communication abilities. Strong analytical capabilities are necessary for evaluating financial data, recognizing trends, and making well-informed decisions. Additionally, they should be skilled in interpreting intricate financial information and communicating findings clearly and effectively.
