Position Summary

The Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) and the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) at Michigan State University are accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position broadly in the biomedical sciences (including structural biology, synthetic biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, systems biology, cancer biology, neuroengineering, chemical biology, imaging, big data, statistics, machine learning, and computational methods applied to biology, regenerative medicine, and bioengineering). The successful candidate will be affiliated with one or more departments such as Microbiology Genetics and Immunology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Chemistry, Computational Mathematics Science and Engineering, or Statistics & Probability, based on their interests, expertise, and achievements.

The ideal candidate must have a PhD in an area relevant to the biomedical sciences, have a strong portfolio of cutting-edge research, exhibit good teaching and communication skills, demonstrate the potential to attract federal research support, and exhibit a strong commitment to academic equity and excellence.

The Institute is dedicated to basic and applied research at the intersection of engineering, human medicine, and natural science. It is called IQ for its dedication to the development of intelligent solutions to the most pressing biomedical quandaries facing scientists and clinicians. IQ is comprised of interactive faculty and staff advancing interdisciplinary research and educational programs built on a foundation of varied biomedical and engineering disciplines at the frontiers of science. The IQ faculty have deep and wide multidisciplinary expertise bridging many areas of biomedical science that support the educational mission of the University. This expertise exists within a culture and institute structure that fosters openness and collaboration to drive convergence in science. This design creates opportunities for making discoveries and developing technologies that dramatically impact clinical care and fundamentally change our understanding of the basic biology of health and disease. Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Biomedical Science or a closely related field 
  • Track record of significant contributions to interdisciplinary biomedical research
  • Potential/ability to establish a sustainable and internationally recognized research program  
  • Potential/ability to attract external funding from federal funding agencies
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students 
  • Interest in/evidence of institutional and professional service  
  • Dedication to the university’s mission in diversity, equity, and inclusion through their research, teaching, and service 

Desired Qualifications

  • Additional research experience beyond the PhD, through a post-doctoral, or industry appointment 
  • Contributions to curriculum development 
  • Ability to collaborate with other scientists at the departmental, college and institutional level.
