Position Summary

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The research associate will work to develop next-generation magnets such as iron-free coil-dominated superconducting quadrupoles and high-temperature superconducting dipoles. With the launch of the High Rigidity Spectrometer (HRS) project as a significant expansion on top of our experimental facilities such as the existing decay station, S800 spectrometer, beam stoppers, and Reaccelerators, you will have a potential opportunity to contribute to the development of large-acceptance high-transmission beamline quadrupole triplets/switching dipoles as well as sweeper/spectrometer dipole integrated with Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA)/Modular Neutron Array (MoNA-LISA), enhancing the capabilities of our experimental capabilities.

  • Superconducting Magnet Design and Analysis:
    • Contribute to next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) hot-cell dipole magnet development
    • Conduct thorough quench analyses and devise robust quench protection schemes, prioritizing the safety and optimal functioning of superconducting magnets
    • Participate actively in the mechanical design aspects, ensuring the integration of key engineering subcomponents for enhanced performance and durability
  • Superconducting Magnet Fabrication and Test:
    • Serve as a recognized subject matter expert in superconducting magnets, providing technical guidance and support throughout the coil winding, construction, assembly, and instrumentation process
    • Contribute hands-on expertise in coil development, including splicing, checking fiberglass prep regs, and validating cyanate ester/epoxy-based adhesive systems
    • Perform energization test, magnetic field measurement test, passive/active quench protection circuit test, cold mass alignment and thus data analysis and documentation
    • Develop comprehensive work control plans, general test procedures, and job safety plans for various activities, including pressure/leak tests, cryogenic cooling tests, energization tests, and mapping activities
    • Execute any other duties as required or assigned within the defined scope of this job classification, ensuring flexibility and adaptability to evolving project needs.
  •

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences
  • Experience in superconducting magnets, accelerator system components, cryogenic systems (LHe and cryocooler) and distributed control system
  • Experience with FEA of EM analysis, 1-D or 2-D quench analysis codes, and CAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites
