Position Summary

The Laboratory of Professor Drzal invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position that will delve into the cutting-edge realm of advanced polymer composite materials. This research endeavor encompasses the development of novel polymeric composite materials, with a focus on thermoset and thermoplastic polymer matrices reinforced by natural plant fibers, including flax, bamboo, and related biocompatible resources. The primary objective of this appointment is to optimize the mechanical properties of these composite materials using advanced techniques, including chemical treatments, the incorporation of nanoparticles and use of biomimetics with an emphasis on achieving performance levels comparable to conventional glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites. In addition to the academic aspect, this project represents a collaborative effort with prominent industry leaders in the automotive and composite materials sectors, offering an unparalleled opportunity to bridge academia with real-world industrial applications. The research also involves the exploration of biomimetic fiber architecture and innovative multi-scale reinforcement strategies, with the overarching goal of delivering pioneering structural materials with a significant bio-based content. This position is aligned with essential sustainability goals for the automotive industry and presents a unique chance to contribute to the future of green engineering. Required Degree

Doctorate -chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering or related field

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering or related field by the start of the position. The candidate must be an expert in the surface treatment of cellulose materials, and the processing and mechanical characterization of polymer composite materials.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a strong polymer composite materials and cellulose surface modification background and experience with the fabrication, processing, and mechanical characterization of fiber reinforced polymer composite materials. Laboratory skills and experience are desired.
