Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or on-call position. Performs a variety of duties in support of summer camps and conferences, such as responding to participant concerns, questions and emergencies; maintaining/monitoring camp rules, checking in/out of participants, attending meetings. May involve overnight supervision of participants. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) Summer Counselors will live in the residence hall and be responsible for providing supervision to participants in the MILP and AIMS summer programs.

Ideal candidates will assist in creating a positive sense of community that aids in the academic and social development of program participants. This will be achieved by developing relationships, serving as a role model and mentor; supporting the work students will be engaged in and assisting activities that promote cultural understanding, community and opportunities associated with Food, Energy and the Environment.

Responsibilities:

All counselors must be on campus July 11-14 for orientation and training. All positions are fully in person on campus. Counselors are on call 24 hours a day during the programs. Overnight supervision of participants is required.

4 Counselors will be on duty for the duration of both summer programs (MILP and AIMS), July 14-26. Counselor commitment will officially end on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 8:00pm or when all wrap up is complete (which ever is earlier)

Counselors are involved in programming which includes weekends and evenings. Counselors will work closely with the program director, fellow counselors and senior counselors to plan and carry out activities. Each counselor is expected to attend all assigned programming and encourage participants to engage in activities. Counselors:

Are required to reside in university housing for the duration of the program and will not be allowed to have overnight visitors.

Will be responsible for attending staff meetings.

Will serve as a resource for students as concerns develop throughout the program in coordination with the senior counselor and program director.

Will be responsible for transporting students in university vans.

Will build a safe, supportive environment where campers can grow, make new friends and engage in new opportunities.

Will be responsible for overseeing and supervising activities of program participants.

Will Assist with check-in and check out of program participants.

Will enforce University and residence hall rules and regulations.

Will be responsible for spending time outdoors in a variety of elements.

Will be responsible for other work duties as assigned by program director.

Desired Qualifications

Ability and desire to work with middle/high school students in grades 8-12.

Ability to promote higher education and college success.

Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience working with students from underrepresented populations.

Successfully completed one year of college, be in good academic standing with the university at the time of application and at the end of the 2024 Spring semester (minimum GPA of 2.0) or have earned a college degree.

Experience working in a team setting.

Must be able to pass all necessary background checks (personal & driving).

Valid driver's license (will be required to drive a 6-10 passenger van).

Must be able to commit fully to position for duration of program.
