Position Summary
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) is in a phase of significant and sustained growth and expansion. We are pleased to invite applications for the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department. Exceptional candidates for the ranks of Associate and Full Professor will also be considered. Multiple tenure-system faculty positions are available. The anticipated start date for these positions is August 16, 2024. Candidates must have a doctoral degree at the time of appointment.
The Department is seeking highly motivated applicants in any area of Computer Science – including those that intersect with other fields – who can enhance or complement the Department's strengths and expertise. Tenure-system computer science faculty are expected to establish a vibrant, sustainable, and internationally visible research program; make significant scholarly contributions to their discipline; be effective teachers and mentors to both undergraduate and graduate students; engage in institutional and professional service as well as public outreach; and contribute toward the university’s DEI mission. The Department and College have a strong track record of mentoring junior faculty to grow their academic careers successfully. Several faculty in the department have received NSF CAREER Awards over the past 5 years.

Department Statement
The Department has strong research programs in several areas of Computer Science and Engineering, including AI, Autonomous Driving, Biometrics, Computer Vision, CyberSecurity, Data Science, Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning, and Software Engineering. The Department has accredited B.S. degree programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. The Department also offers a B.S. degree in Computational Data Science. In addition to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, the Department offers an M.S. degree in Data Science in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science & Engineering.
The size of MSU’s freshman class for fall 2023 is around 11,000 and that of the College of Engineering is 1,750. Out of those 1,750 students, 625 expressed a preference for Computer Science and Engineering. There are currently over 265 graduate students and 1,900 undergraduate students in the Department. The Department is home to 20 research laboratories, with annual research expenditures exceeding $8 million.
MSU enjoys a park-like campus in the city of East Lansing, adjacent to Lansing, the capital of Michigan. The Lansing metropolitan area has a diverse population of approximately half a million.
