Fundamental Symmetries Scientist

Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.

As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. 

User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.

 

The major responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Prepare the fundamental symmetries experiments at the Laboratory 
    • Communicate and implement requirements for the fundamental symmetries experiments
    • Verify experiments are within the specifications of the Laboratory
  • Assist experimenters with the design, set-up, and carry out of the experiment 
    • Advise the experimenters as they prepare for experiments at the Laboratory
    • Analyze their experiments
    • Verify experiments run according to the approved plan, document experiences, and identify possible improvements
  • Perform research and development projects to enhance the performance of fundamental symmetries experiments by 
    • Developing ion and neutral atom traps
    • Developing cold atomic/molecular beam sources and
    • Performing atomic/molecular spectroscopy
  • Mentor and supervise a diverse group of students within an inclusive and equitable environment 
  • Perform scientific research related to fundamental symmetries using rare isotopes 
  • Publish results in scientific journals and make presentations at seminars and professional meetings 
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of fundamental symmetries
  • General knowledge of experimental setups and procedures in a laboratory environment
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and regulations in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of ion and neutral atom traps, cold atomic/molecular beam sources, and atomic molecular spectroscopy techniques
  • Ability to implement and enforce laboratory standards and protocols
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot experimental issues
  • Knowledge and ability to program in C, python, Matlab, or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly verbally and in writing with all audiences.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills

Required Degree

Doctorate -Physics or Chemistry

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in physics or chemistry in the area of experimental atomic, molecular, optical physics or nuclear science
  • At least two years of postdoctoral experience by September 2024
  • At least three years of experience in the experimental fields of fundamental symmetries, precision measurements, and/or atomic/molecular/optical physics by September 2024
  • Demonstrated experience working with multi-institution collaborations

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with lasers and optics
  • Experience with atomic/molecular spectroscopy
  • Experience with atomic/molecular beams
  • Experience with laser cooling
  • Experience with ion or neutral laser traps
  • Experience with coordinating day-to-day activities on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated familiarity with cryogenic engineering
  • Demonstrated familiarity with microwave engineering
