Position Summary

The Research Associate will conduct research, design, prototype, develop, and implement high-level physics applications to enhance the performance of primary beams on target and secondary beams for experiments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of new techniques, software, and hardware to improve the performance of the driver- and re-accelerators
  • Develop physics applications for tuning and optimization of Re-Accelerator
  • Assist with the development of primary ion beams in the driver linac
  • Write technical reports and scientific papers
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities in this job classification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Skillful ability with beam dynamics and electrodynamics computer programs
  • Knowledge of major programming languages (C++, Python)
  • Skillful ability with heavy-ion beam diagnostic equipment
  • Skillful ability with the development of accelerator physics applications in Python-Qt and EPICS environment
  • Thorough knowledge of software development practices and techniques for computational and data-intensive science problems
  • Knowledge of nuclear physics, physics of the ion beam interaction with materials
  • Knowledge of distributed accelerator control systems and their underlying concepts
  • Proficient in software development practices, particularly in Python, and able to apply  knowledge to create innovative solutions
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and present findings by communicating effectively (both orally and written)
  • Ability to conceive and execute studies of primary and secondary beam dynamics using existing software
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment on ion beam development goals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites

Required Degree

Doctorate -Physics or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in accelerator physics, physics, or computer science
  • At least one year of experience with accelerator beam physics
  • At least one year of experience with scientific application codes

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the development of computer programs on Python
