Position Summary
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will have the opportunity to contribute to one of the research programs listed below:
1) Manipulation of low-energy heavy rare isotope beams for fundamental symmetries – we are developing two instruments – one to produce a pure beam of low-energy radioactive molecular ions and one to search for the parity doublet of Pa-229 using internal conversion electron spectroscopy – this position would assist with both projects (Jaideep Singh).
2) Laser spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules – the goal of this research is to develop and apply new sensitive precision experimental techniques to study molecules composed of short-lived radioactive nuclei which are relevant to studies of nuclear structure and fundamental symmetries (Shane Wilkins).
3) Laser spectroscopy, and deceleration & cooling of radioactive molecules – the goal of this research is to develop a cryogenic spectroscopy platform for radioactive molecules which is offline from FRIB accelerator facility, and to develop techniques to bring these molecules towards the ultracold regime (Xing Wu).
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform research and development activities to support the FRIB Precision Measurements experimental program.
- Make detailed observations, analyze data and interpret results.
- Compile results and prepare technical reports and documentation of outcomes.
- Collaborate with other researchers with respect to large or more complex studies.
- Prepare and submit research results for publication.
- Attend conferences and seminars and present the results of the research program.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of one or more of the following areas:
- Laser spectroscopy of radioactive nuclei, molecular spectroscopy, laser cooling, low-energy ion beam manipulation, and internal conversion electron spectroscopy.
- Capacity to conduct independent and original nuclear science and/or atomic physics research using strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to design and execute experiments and/or analyze experimental data, interpret results, and draw conclusions.
- Ability to collaborate and work with a diverse group of students and scientists.
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
