Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative (https://msuhurleypphi.org/), under the direction of Dr. Mona Hanna, seeks to hire undergraduate and graduate student interns for the summer of 2025. The overall mission of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (PPHI) is to improve the outcomes of Flint children. Through clinical and community programs, partnerships, advocacy, training, and evaluation, the Pediatric Public Health Initiative strives for health equity and serves as a national resource for best practices. The PPHI is driven by five work teams: Child and Health Development, Nutrition, Exposure Assessment, Health Informatics, and Child Health Policy and Advocacy. These teams work closely with the PPHI Parent Partner Group and the PPHI Flint Youth Justice League.

 

The summer interns may support different aspects of study and program planning, implementation, and/or dissemination. Activities may occur at the MSU Flint location and/or at local medical clinics or hospitals.

 

Activities supported by the interns may include assistance with:

  • Grant and proposal writing;
  • Performing literature reviews and writing summaries with citations;
  • Developing study protocols and manuals of procedures;
  • Submitting research protocols to institutional review board;
  • Recruiting and tracking study participants;
  • Collecting and entering data;
  • Coordinating with study participants and staff;
  • Communicating with investigators, participants, and stakeholders;
  • Creating and managing study databases;
  • Performing basic statistical analysis including creating calculated or computed variables;
  • Conducting data quality checks;
  • Preparing reports;
  • Manuscript writing, editing, formatting and submission;
  • Marketing and outreach;
  • Community engagement; and/or
  • Other research or project activities to support work, as applicable

 

Project team and duties will be assigned based on project needs and candidate skills. Candidates must have availability to work in-person in Flint, MI. Depending on project assigned, in-person work assignments will be 1 to 5 days a week.

 

Hourly rate of pay for undergraduate students is $16/hr and for graduate students and recent college graduates is $19/hr.

 

Interviews will be conducted in February 2025 and offers made in March 2025. Internship is located in Flint, MI and will run 5/19/2025 – 8/8/2025.

Desired Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with some college credits, or recent college graduate
  • Basic knowledge of web-based communication, competent keyboarding, high level of comfort with development of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, including basic proficiency in the following software: Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office PowerPoint
  • Able to work independently in an organized and efficient manner
  • Excellent oral and written skills with the ability to write and conduct daily communications
  • Understanding the history, systemic inequities, and experiences related to the Flint
  • Demonstrates the values consistent with PPHI: Respect, Teamwork, Diversity, Equity, Kindness, Integrity, Humility, Inclusion, Community, Optimism
