General Assignment Reporter (On-Call)

Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

WKAR is looking for an on-call General Assignment Reporter who is eager to produce compelling, in-depth stories that connect with our listeners. This is a dynamic role for a motivated journalist who thrives on the challenge of tackling quick-turn spot news, producing long-form features, and uncovering the stories that matter most to our audience. This temporary position offers a hybrid work schedule. While core hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., flexibility is required for covering news events and special broadcasts. Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be required.

Content Creation and Reporting (90%):

• Cover a range of topics including breaking news, community events, and issues around the environment, economy, and education.
• Research, pitch, and produce engaging stories for both short- and long-form formats on radio and digital platforms.
• Conduct field and phone interviews, ensuring diverse perspectives and voices are included.
• Write clear, compelling scripts for on-air broadcasts, meeting tight deadlines.
• Collaborate with the news editor to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to NPR standards.
• Attend community events and press conferences, and report live from the field when necessary to provide context for ongoing events.

On-Air Hosting and Support (10%):

• Serve as a fill-in host for All Things Considered and Morning Edition as needed.
• Support team members by filling in as a copy editor when required.

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• 1-3 years of journalism experience, with excellent reporting, writing, and interviewing skills.
• Excellent reporting, writing, and interviewing skills.
• Proficiency in digital production tools (e.g., Adobe Audition or similar).
• Strong communication skills and a deep commitment to journalistic integrity.
• Familiarity with digital and social media platforms.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also being open to feedback and collaboration.
