Position Summary:

Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) and the Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute seek a Part-Time Program Assistant to support local Consumer Horticulture programs, including the Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program. This role involves coordinating volunteers, assisting with program promotion and expansion, and supporting data collection for impact evaluation.

As an assistant to the Consumer Horticulture team, you will:

  • Serve as a point of contact for volunteers and potential participants.
  • Assist with onboarding new Extension Master Gardener volunteers.
  • Communicate regularly with program volunteers.
  • Help ensure program activities align with MSU Extension's mission and community needs.
  • Work with community partners to achieve program goals.
  • Although negotiable, office space will be available at the Iosco County MSU Extension Office. This position may offer flexible work arrangements, but there is an expectation to work from an MSU Extension County office.

Key Responsibilities

Program Coordination & Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the MSU Extension Consumer Horticulture Team and local volunteers, including those who are members of Master Gardener Associations.
  • In collaboration with the MSUE Master Gardener State Office, manage volunteer databases and communicate procedures and policies to local MSU EMGs.
  • Assist in planning and organizing local Extension Master Gardener volunteer programs.
  • Support outreach and promotional efforts to expand program participation.

Volunteer Engagement & Community Outreach

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and coordination of Extension Master Gardener volunteers.
  • Communicate with volunteers regarding training, events, and program updates.
  • Help identify and remove barriers to participation.
  • Attend local program meetings and community events as needed.
  • Provide opportunities for volunteers to socialize and participate in MSU Extension classes and events.

Diversity, Accessibility, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Promote inclusive programming that engages diverse audiences.
  • Ensure programs address the needs of Michigan’s varied communities.

Professional Development & MSU Extension Representation

  • Participate in training and development opportunities.
  • Represent MSU Extension in meetings, workshops, and public events.
  • Use technology, media, and community networks to share program information.

Desired Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - Mandatory

  • Combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.
  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Travel in local and surrounding communities are required as a regular part of this position.
  • Occasional long-distance travel may be required.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.
  • Transportation is the responsibility of the employee.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

This is a part-time, end-dated appointment, renewable based upon continued funding.

 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team.
  • Experience with volunteer coordination or community outreach is a plus.
