Working/Functional Title
Superconducting Device Design Engineer
Position Summary
Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.
User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report..
This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.
Purpose
The Superconducting Device Design Engineer will be part of a team responsible for designing, prototyping, and building state-of-the-art superconducting magnets and cryomodules. These efforts are aimed at supporting the operation of FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) and potential future upgrades. Additionally, the Superconducting Device Design Engineer will be involved in the troubleshooting of superconducting devices in the FRIB accelerator on an on-call basis.
Major Position Responsibilities
- Responsible for the structural design and analysis of a 28 GHz ECR magnet, utilizing Nb3Sn technology for the next generation of ECR magnets. Due to Nb3Sn wire sensitivity to stress and strain, optimizing the structure of this magnet type is crucial.
- Provide conceptual structural designs for superconducting quad and dipole magnets, using NbTi, Nb3Sn, and HTS technology, specifically for beam line magnets.
- Participate in the structural design of the FRIB 644 MHz upgrade cryomodule.
- Perform FEA (Finite Element Analysis) analysis to ensure the cryogenic vessel complies with the ASME pressure vessel and piping code.
- Conduct thermal analysis for superconducting devices.
- Develop procedures for assembling and testing superconducting magnets. Write design reports, work control plans, and technical specification documents.
- Create technical specifications for superconducting magnet systems and subcomponents for procurement. Provide technical oversight of the procurement process, including reviewing vendor test results, non-conformance reports, and witnessing vendor factory tests.
- Deliver presentations on group/department activities, progress, and developments to various entities, including the Department, Division, Project Office, review groups, professional organizations, workshops, and conferences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience in the design and analysis of superconducting magnets with accelerator system components and cryogenic systems
- Ability to perform FEA (Finite Element Analysis) analysis to ensure the cryogenic vessel compiles with the ASME pressure vessel and piping code
- Ability to serve as the subject matter expert on superconducting magnets and provide technical guidance to the procurement process including reviewing vendor test results, non-conformance reports, and vendor factory test
- Ability to comply with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
