ASL Ast Inst/Inst/Ast Prof - Fixed Term

Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures at Michigan State University seeks one part-time Fixed-Term American Sign Language Instructor (or Assistant Instructor) or Fixed-Term Assistant Professor of American Sign Language. This is a fixed-term, two-month summer position beginning May 12, 2025. Rank is determined by highest degree, with a Bachelors required for Assistant Instructor position, a Master’s degree required for an Instructor position, and a PhD required for a Fixed-Term Assistant Professor position. All degrees must be conferred by the time of hire.

The successful candidate will teach one four-credit combined asynchronous (150 minutes) plus two 50-minute synchronous sessions of ASL each summer session. The first summer session class meets from May 12, 2025 – June 27, 2025, and the second summer session class meets from July 1, 2025 – August 15, 2025. The synchronous sessions meet on Thursdays from 4-5pm and 5-6pm.

Position is planned to recur every Summer Semester

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors (Ast. Instructor), Master’s (Instructor), or Doctorate (Ast. Professor), preferably in a related field.
  • Two to three years’ experience teaching ASL college students in a classroom setting in North America.
  • Some experience teaching synchronously and asynchronously online.
  • Experience using TrueWay ASL and integrating it with a Learning Management System, preferably D2L.
  • A score of at least 3+ on the ASL proficiency interview.
  • Availability to teach both summer sessions at the scheduled times.

Desired Qualifications

  • A score of 4 on the ASL Proficiency Interview.
  • Five years’ experience teaching ASL
  • Experience creating an ASL curriculum or coordinating an ASL program
