Working/Functional Title

Associate/Full Professor Tenure System

Position Summary

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees approved in 2014 the Academic Competitiveness Fund (ACF) to provide resources for hiring tenure system faculty who will enhance the national and international excellence and competitiveness of MSU as an R1 top-tier research university. From this resource, the Global Impact Initiative (GII) was launched, aiming to recruit 100 new faculty in some of the most exciting new research areas. Entering its second phase in 2022, the GII is now seeking investigators for positions aligned with key areas of research outlined in the University’s 2030 Strategic Plan.

This position is supported by Michigan State University’s Global Impact Initiative, which is designed to address global ‘grand’ challenges and national priorities through the creation of over 100 new faculty positions in some of the most promising – and critical – fields of research. The GII is a comprehensive investment focusing on new and enhanced research endeavors around health, energy, education, the environment, food, national security, and global development. Concurrently, this initiative is moving Michigan State University forward, allowing us to aggressively pursue big ideas, innovation, and global impact and respond to the MSU 2030 Strategic Plan Strategic Plan | Michigan State University (msu.edu).

The Michigan State University College of Nursing is fully committed to addressing the significant issues associated with extant health disparities and improving health equity nationally and globally. We are looking to hire a mid- or senior-level tenure track faculty member who is a national expert in Health Services Research. More specifically, given the increasing complexity of healthcare delivery and collection of healthcare data, complementary expertise is needed in data science, health informatics, and health technology. The applicant's research should enhance or complement current College of Nursing concentrations in health promotion and illness prevention, symptom science and management, or health services research, all within the context of addressing health equity and social determinants of health.

As a senior researcher in the College of Nursing, focusing on Health Services Research, the position responsibilities include obtaining and continuing an established program of funded extramural and interdisciplinary research; being a published nursing scholar; teaching across undergraduate and graduate nursing education focusing on area(s) of expertise; outreach and community service and active involvement with college and university committees. The position also requires a strong commitment to student mentorship. The appointment of academic rank and salary are dependent on evidence of research, teaching, and scholarship achievements. This is an academic year faculty position.

Michigan State University actively promotes a dynamic research and learning environment in which qualified individuals of differing perspectives, and cultural backgrounds pursue academic goals with mutual respect and shared inquiry. Academic and research integrity along with ethical behavior are expected of all faculty in the College of Nursing.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining a program of research associated with Health Services Research
  • Assisting/Leading the development of curriculum associated with health informatics
  • Working with senior research leadership within the College, University, and community to bring together various disciplines across colleges and health partners to address health challenges
  • In collaboration with our Associate Dean for Research and the PhD Program, assisting early career scientists to build and strengthen the focus of their research, specifically in the area of healthcare technologies, health informatics, and related health outcomes
  • Mentor pre-doctoral students and junior faculty in the area of Health Services Research
  • Leverage data science, health informatics, and health technology to grow the College of Nursing research portfolio
  • Participating in recruitment activities related to junior, mid-stage, and senior researchers
  • Participating in service to the college and university (i.e., academic governance process)
  • Participating in community outreach and networking at local, regional, state, national and international levels

  • Strive to champion inclusive practices that create an environment ripe for transformational change through engaging in or leading initiatives that change structural systems within nursing education which have historically inhibited, disenfranchised, marginalized, and unintentionally excluded underrepresented communities.
