Position Summary

The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) and the Department of Media and Information (M&I) at Michigan State University invite applications for a full‐time, 9-month tenure system Assistant Professor of Communication and Information Technology Economics with a 65% research, 30% teaching, and 5% service assignment. The position’s start date is anticipated to be 8/16/2025. The successful candidate is expected to gain international recognition through peer-reviewed scholarly publications, pursue external funding to support their research, teach at the graduate and undergraduate level, and advise graduate students.

Applications are encouraged from scholars working within a diverse range of methodological traditions whose research addresses the economic impact, use, design, or management of information and communication technologies, including: Networking Infrastructure, Internet and Web Technologies, Software Applications, Telecommunication, or Smart Agriculture. The joint nature of this position reflects a belief in the importance of cross-disciplinary approaches to address the role and impacts of information and communication technologies on issues that might include agriculture, education, policy, food security, nutrition, health, and income.  Those with an interest in applications of communication and information technology to international development are encouraged to apply. 

In addition to the above, successful candidates are expected to:

  • Demonstrate training/experience sufficient to teach core undergraduate and graduate classes in a broad range of topic areas as described above. The initial assignment is envisioned to be a graduate causal inference course (AFRE) and an undergraduate information and communication technologies for development (M&I).  The teaching assignment may change based on skills of the candidate and needs of the departments. 
  • Publish in high-quality journals.
  • Secure competitive grants.
  • Collaborate effectively with other faculty within AFRE, M&I, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Communication Arts, and other departments on campus, as well as with stakeholder groups.
  • Mentor graduate/undergraduate students, serve on departmental, college, and university committees, and engage in service through professional networks and organizations.
  • Participate as a collaborative colleague with responsibilities in the functioning of the unit’s governance and inclusive culture.
  • Provide leadership and service in professional associations.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Agricultural economics, economics, or a related field or a Ph.D. in communication and information studies and technologies or a related field.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in agricultural economics, economics, or a related field (with significant training and/or research in communication technologies and/or services), or a Ph.D. in communication and information studies and technologies or a related field (with significant training/and or research in economics).
