Working/Functional Title

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System

Position Summary

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University (MSU) and the MSU Center for Cancer Health Equity Research (CCHER) are recruiting a faculty colleague at any rank. CCHER is a newly formed collaborative endeavor between MSU's Colleges of Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Natural Science, and the Henry Ford Health System, to broadly advance research that promotes cancer health equity.  https://bmb.natsci.msu.edu/news/2023-05-15-prominent-cancer-researcher-joins-msu.aspx

We seek to hire a faculty colleague who is motivated to develop an independently funded research program that addresses cancer health disparities, with a future focus that includes minority populations, particularly Native Americans. The ideal candidate for this open rank tenure-track position will have a substantial record of achievement in discerning the molecular basis of cancer, including etiology, diagnostics, prevention, and/or treatment.

Prior engagement with minority communities, including Native American populations, in biomedical research and training is desirable. An interest in furthering health equity through research, training and community engagement is integral to this position.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead a vibrant, collaborative research program that focuses on molecular mechanisms in cancer.
  • Engage in developing and supporting health equity outcomes through research, training and community engagement, with a focus on Native American communities. This engagement will be supported by a network of Native American health and community-focused entities and faculty at Michigan State University (https://nai.msu.edu/, https://www.law.msu.edu/clinics/indian.html, https://bmb.natsci.msu.edu/_assets/files/research/BuildingBridgesFlyerSummer2024.pdf, https://epibio.msu.edu/faculty/gartner.html, https://people.cal.msu.edu/guerre21)
  • Guide professional development of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Provide instruction at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or medical student levels.
  • Participate in service activities across department, college, and university.
  • Demonstrate commitment to institutional efforts on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

To support these efforts, the candidate will be provided a generous startup package, and access to a wide network of collaborative and interdisciplinary cancer-focused teams within and beyond the university (https://cancer.msu.edu). Research efforts will be supported by access to cutting-edge research technologies and approaches through MSU’s 41 Research Centers, Institutes, and Facilities (https://natsci.msu.edu/research/research-centers-facilities.aspx).

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, or related fields.
  • At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in relevant areas of cancer research (for starting investigators).
  • Research excellence demonstrated through quality peer-reviewed publications.
  • History of securing external research funding (for established researchers).
  • Interest and track record of engagement in broader impacts of health care research, including but not limited to outreach to underserved communities, communication to wider audiences, and training of scientists from underrepresented groups.
  • Plans for future scholarly work, including impact on health disparities.
  • Commitment to teaching, mentorship, and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion.
