The Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for five fixed-term faculty positions (non-tenure-track) at the assistant-professor rank, slated to begin in August 2024. This hire represents a significant strategic investment by MSU to advance the Department of Kinesiology. The initiative is in response to the department's consistent and robust growth over the last thirty years. With nearly 1,500 undergraduate enrollees, the Kinesiology major has evolved into one of the most popular academic programs at MSU and is highly sought-after nationwide. The collective bargaining agreement between the Union of Non-Tenure-Track Faculty (UNTF) and MSU specifies that fixed-term faculty members are eligible to apply for Designation B "during the first month of the eighth or subsequent semester of Academic-Year teaching employment within seven years of the first of these semesters in a given employing unit." Designation B is a multi-year contract appointment predicated on exemplary instructional performance. Fixed-term faculty members attaining Designation B status will receive a contract for no less than three years (typically, 5 years) for the UNTF teaching portion of their assignment and a potential raise in their base salary. Beyond attaining Designation B status, fixed-term faculty members can also pursue advancement through the academic ranks (i.e., promotion to Associate Professor – Fixed Term and Professor – Fixed Term) following established evaluation and review procedures.
We are seeking qualified candidates with expertise in the following five domains of Kinesiology (in no particular order of importance or priority):
- One fixed-term position (assistant-professor rank) in exercise physiology. Instructional responsibilities will include introductory and advanced undergraduate lectures and laboratories, and potentially graduate-level lectures, in exercise physiology and human anatomy.
- One fixed-term position (assistant-professor rank) in neuromotor control / biomechanics. Instructional responsibilities will include undergraduate courses, and potentially graduate-level lectures, in human motor control and motor learning, as well as biomechanics.
- One fixed-term position (assistant-professor rank) in exercise and sport psychology. Instructional responsibilities will include introductory and advanced undergraduate lectures and laboratories, and potentially graduate-level lectures, in exercise psychology and sport psychology
- One fixed-term position (assistant-professor rank) in sport administration. Instructional responsibilities will include developing and teaching Master's-level courses in sport administration as part of the expansion of our online master's program in Sport Coaching, Leadership, and Administration (SCLA). Other responsibilities for this position include advising master’s degree students and developing experiences for their professional preparation.
- One fixed-term position (assistant-professor rank) in strength and conditioning. Instructional responsibilities will include developing and teaching Master's-level courses focusing on the science of strength and conditioning as part of the expansion of our online master's program in Sport Coaching, Leadership, and Administration (SCLA). Other responsibilities for this position include advising master’s degree students and developing experiences for their professional preparation.
- Teach and develop curriculum for undergraduate and graduate courses aligned with expertise and departmental needs.
- Advise, mentor, and help recruit students.
- Provide service relevant to the department, college, university, profession, and community at large.
- Contribute to intellectual activities within the department.
