Position Summary

The College of Nursing (CON) at Michigan State University is seeking applications for an outreach and student engagement specialist for Student Success and Retention. The outreach and student engagement specialist will coordinate, implement, and facilitate outreach initiatives and programming to promote student retention and success within the College of Nursing. This position is crucial in supporting the student success and retention team that will aid in delivering resources and guidance to Nursing and Pre-Nursing students – ensuring academic, personal, and professional development. The outreach & student engagement specialist will collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to enhance and assist with advancing the CON’s student success and retention goals.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating student success and retention programs and initiatives, including, but not limited to, mentoring programs, ACCESS program, Future Nurse Club, Nurse Scholars program, Pre-College Summer Enrichment programs, and Nursing Residential Living-Learning Community.
  • Develop proposals to create and expand K-12 outreach initiatives offered by the Student Success and Retention team within the College of Nursing.
  • Collaborate and participate in the MSU Office of Admissions specialized recruitment and outreach events (on and off campus) geared towards increasing diversity at MSU, including, but not limited to, Spartan Club, African American Family Day, Metro Detroit Youth Day, etc.
  • Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and communications related to Student Success and Retention programs, events, and initiatives.
  • Assist with assessing, evaluating, and refreshing Student Success and Retention support offerings to maximize student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to identify and/or develop support services, programs, and protocols based on assessment data related to student success and retention.

This is an in-person position, and the successful candidate will work primarily on the campus of MSU. This work schedule for this position is generally Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, with the expectation that the candidate will attend evening and weekend events as planned.

Masters -Student Affairs, Education, Social Work,

Minimum Requirements

  • One-three years of experience in program development, project management, or recruitment.
  • Culturally competent with experience working with culturally diverse individuals and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) with experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service, handle multiple priorities simultaneously with confidence and poise in a fast-paced environment, and prioritize activities to meet deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively and constructively with people at multiple levels and with diverse perspectives and to build consensus across various divisions of a complex organization.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality concerning all matters relating to students (prospect, current, and alums), including, but not limited to, applicant data, student academic records, personal information, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Shar Point, Teams, and Outlook, and proficiency or ability to become proficient in any College of Nursing databases
  • Ability to lift 30+ lbs
  • Valid driver’s license

  • Understanding the unique criteria and intricacies of Nursing or Health Professions curricula.
  • Ability to work with detailed information with attention to accuracy; strong skills in documentation, tracking, and data collection.
  • Proven success in innovative thinking to develop and implement creative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Business Systems (EBS).
