Position Summary

The Office of Research and Innovation (OR&I) is a Major Administrative Unit (MAU) with more than 500 employees who support MSU’s research and creative activity by administering research funding, ensuring research integrity for both faculty and students, providing grant support services, fostering collaboration, licensing university inventions, and overseeing regulatory compliance.

The Research Administrator II will serve as the point of contact for the Plant Resilience Institute (PRI). The person in this position will enhance recognition of MSU in addressing plant resilience to environmental challenges including extremes in weather and climate change and help MSU to become an International Center of Excellence for foundational and translational plant research.

Note: The position will be hybrid, with a mix of remote and in-person work.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Creates a variety of reports, documents and correspondence for regulatory agencies, participating research sites, and for internal purposes in order to assist in the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the research program’s progress. Manages and coordinates the institute programs and operations of substantial impact to the institute (e.g. certificate programs) 

Works independently to ensure goals and objectives established by the PRI Director are met. Balances multiple assignments, delivers quality analysis under time constrained deadlines. Serves as the primary point of contact for the Institute. 

Manages project development needs including proposal writing; facilitating collaboration with other resources as needed, and identifying internal capabilities and expertise. Coordinates collaboration within and across other units to ensure achievement of PRI objectives. 

Develops and coordinates research compliance process components, including budget review and justification, feasibility, research billing process, conflict of interest reporting, program evaluation, monthly and annual reporting processes.

Assists with fiscal and human resource operations, including processing of HR forms and requests. Completes administrative projects and ensures compliance with university policies and procedures. 
In partnership with the PI; research, collect data, and develop grant proposals and submission materials including biosketch and other documents as needed. Responsible for final proposal and provides institute reports as related to grants when requested. Coordinates transactional processing of grant and PRI related expenditures. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business administration, Finance, or a research-related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration including the area of pre- or post-award processes, or related field such as regulatory administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This job requires completion of Essentials of Research Administration (MSU Certificate) or equivalent within one year of hire. 

Desired Qualifications

Knowledgeable in MSU Accounting practices and HR policies

Experience with Kuali Financial System, EBS system, Campus Solutions
