Position Summary

Employee will be responsible for reviewing and suggesting preliminary decisions on medical school applications. In addition, the position assists, organizes, and oversees Interview Days for potential medical students; oversees/verifies premedical requirements, etc., for interviewees. This position regularly attends admissions committee meetings to gain perspective on committee decisions, especially as it related to any need for providing feedback to unsuccessful CHM applicants.  The individual will counsel potential applicants, especially those who have past unsuccessful applications. The position assists with organizing and implementing admissions related meetings, applicant interviews, and recruitment programs; responds to CHM Admissions general email account; facilitates review of scholarship applications; responds to other colleges/universities inquiries to answer questions and provide information.  The individual will assist with logistic implementation of Early Assurance Opportunity (MSU, some community colleges) and Mission SMART, both of which are alternative acceptance pathways to CHM based on excellent mission fit.  Oversee and implement pipeline programming for disadvantaged high school and college students towards medical careers with a focus on central and eastern Michigan urban communities.  The individual assists in the hiring of on-call and student employees; supervises admissions area on-call application screeners; works cooperatively/collaboratively with other Admissions Counselors and Admissions Officers.  The role serves as a resource person to the Assistant Dean for Admissions.  Occasional travel is necessary, and the successful candidate should anticipate some required evening/weekend hours.  This position is based at the MSU Clinical Center in East Lansing and will require occasional trips to other community campuses across the state for meetings and recruitment events; as such, this employee must live or be willing to relocate to a community within daily driving commuting distance (< 60 miles) from East Lansing. This position may allow for a hybrid remote/on-site work model once the employee is fully acclimated to the work environment. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in admissions, counseling, public relations, student services or related area, including implementing programs and schedules, making formal presentations, and working with the public; experience with database, spreadsheet, desk top publishing and/or presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; may require conversational proficiency in a foreign language.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's and/or Master’s degree related to higher education, student affairs, communications, or related writing-intensive field; demonstration of healthy, collaborative work relationships with guidance counselors and college/university department staff/faculty/students; demonstrated experience communicating with and forging healthy, productive relationships with urban-based communities; demonstrated successful experience in implementing recruitment specific programs; excellent reading speed and comprehension; ability to analyze data and make recommendations; experience with prioritizing workflow; effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills; a minimum of one year experience in student services at the college/university level; demonstrated computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
