The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University invites applications for a full‐time, 9-month (AY) tenure track Assistant Professor with a 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service assignment. The position start date is anticipated to be August 16, 2023.
The individual selected for this position will be expected to develop a regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized program centered on inland fisheries, with multi-national aspects and attention to global characteristics, trends, and/or magnitude of inland fisheries. The candidate should be interested in developing a research program with elements centered beyond North America, that addresses the role and importance of inland fisheries on a global scale and across national borders, acknowledging the importance of both sustainable capture fisheries and aquaculture to livelihoods and food security throughout the world. The candidate is expected to work with appropriate state, regional, national, and/or international partners to advance awareness of the importance of, and conditions facing, inland fisheries on a global scale.
We seek a scientist with background in the application of fisheries science to decision making. Candidates with a range of disciplinary backgrounds will be considered, including but not limited to fisheries science, biology, ecology, economics, human dimensions, and governance. Candidates who can complement current inland fishery expertise at MSU, take a quantitative approach, and promote and improve inland fishery assessment and management and the avoidance of environmental damage are particularly encouraged to apply. An ideal candidate would be focused on how capture fisheries of various types (e.g., recreational, subsistence, commercial) interact with the environment, aquaculture, and other users of freshwater to affect food security and livelihoods.

Doctorate -a discipline relevant to fisheries/aquaculture
An earned Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to fisheries/aquaculture or a closely related field. A demonstrated record of activities in fishery systems and fishery management issues related to capture fisheries and their interaction with the environment. Evidence that the candidate will contribute substantial scholarship on global inland fisheries (i.e., will publish and obtain grants in areas related to the position). Ability to engage with partners (e.g., FAO, WorldFish, Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, Michigan, and other Departments of Natural Resources) and community stakeholders through collaborative outreach. Evidence of ability to implement and evaluate high-impact evidence-based teaching and learning practices for undergraduate and graduate education. Evidence the candidate will promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at MSU and in the field of fisheries relevant to the position.
Skills in quantitative, data poor assessment. A track record in producing peer-reviewed publications. Track record in obtaining extramural grant funding. Experience and evidence-based ideas for developing a program relevant to fisheries governance/policy or management. Postdoctoral experience or other post-PhD professional work experience in general area of fisheries management. Experience and/or background in aquaculture and the ability to lead and contribute to interdisciplinary teams.
