The College of Social Science is seeking applications for an Academic Specialist - Advisor for the undergraduate Social Science Scholars’ Program. The Social Science Scholars Program offers its students more opportunities, support, and one-on-one investment than any other undergraduate program in the United States. Each year we recruit diverse, close-knit cohorts of incoming freshmen and rising sophomores who wish to learn in small groups, conduct research, get to know their faculty, find excellent internships, and take on leadership roles on campus and in the community.
This position works with the Director of the Social Science Scholars Program in supporting academic enrichment and advisement and operations of the program. The primary advising responsibilities include: Safeguard and promote the mental, academic and social welfare of Scholars; engage with Scholars’ academic program mentors and advisors; monitor collegiality and address disciplinary matters as they arise. The successful candidate will oversee, with the Director, the Scholars Program budget; engage in program recruitment activities - liaise with MSU Admissions, visit high schools and will participate in Alumni Distinguished Scholarship event, and will organize interviews with prospective Scholars. Advisor will arrange events including the annual Detroit trip, annual Scholars’ book launch, and will develop alumni events, program activities, and service days. Advisor will coordinate study abroad assignments, attend student leadership council meetings, and alumni advisory board meetings. Advisor will also assist students in the management of their financial aid needs, including assigning and processing scholarships and will develop/maintain annual program materials, including the Scholars Handbook.
This is a fixed-term appointment at 75% time (approximately a 30-hour per week commitment) for twelve months; annual renewal will be based on program needs, funding, and performance.

Masters -Social Science or Education
Master's degree in Social Science, Education or related discipline. One to three years advising or related experience in an education setting.
