Position Summary

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams is searching for a self-driven, energic, scientist who enjoys solving complex problems. 

As a Low-Energy Rare Isotope Beam Scientist, you will...

  • Operates beam stopping systems including linear gas stoppers, a cyclotron gas stopper, a batch-mode-ion source system, as well as mass separation and beam transport systems, and supporting the maintenance of those [30%]
  • Prepares and develops new beams and contributes to continuous efforts aiming at increased beam purity and higher beam rates [30%]
  • Contributes to technical innovation related to ion sources, solid-stopper ion source systems, low-energy beam optics, ion manipulation instrumentation, and specialized detection systems for low-energy rare isotope beams [20%]
  • Performs calculations using both analytical as well as computer modeling in support of these developments [15%]
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. [5%]

  • Knowledge of ion beam production and related techniques
  • Knowledge of beam physics, beam diagnostics, and vacuum technology
  • Skill and ability to operate and maintain complex technical systems
  • Skill and ability in the application or the development of ion beams
  • Ability to analyze and resolve technical problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to effectively work in a team
  • Ability to perform moderate to complex mathematical calculations

Minimum Requirements

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Hold a PhD in Experimental Physics, Nuclear Chemistry, or related field
  • Have three years of demonstrated work in experimental research
  • Have demonstrated experience in the development, testing, or operation of scientific instrumentation or equipment for beam manipulation
  • Ability to work with export-controlled technologies

Desired Qualifications

You'll go above and beyond our minimum qualifications if you...

  • Demonstrated experience in the operation of ISOL-type target ion source systems, gas stopper systems, radio-frequency ion guides or traps, mass separators including multi-reflection time-of-flight systems, or ion sources including laser ion sources
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of radioactive material and the manipulation and use of rare isotope beams
  • Demonstrated experience in programming in C++ or similar languages, in the use of Monte-Carlo codes for particle transport in the matter, charged particle beam transport codes, and electromagnetic physics simulations codes
  •
