Position Summary

The Michigan State University-Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative (https://msuhurleypphi.org/) in the Division of Public Health at Michigan State University is seeking a full or part-time Academic Specialist-Research fixed term (non-tenure track) for one year. This position will be based in Flint, Michigan. The overall mission of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (PPHI) is to improve the outcomes of Flint children. Through community and clinical programs, childhood health policy and advocacy, and robust evaluation, the PPHI works with many partners, including Flint's heroic parents and kids, as a center of excellence, with the primary goal of mitigating the impact of the Flint Water Crisis and serving as a national resource for best practices. The PPHI is driven by five work teams: Child and Health Development, Nutrition, Exposure Assessment, Health Informatics, and Child Health Policy and Advocacy. These teams work closely with the PPHI Parent Partner Group and the PPHI Flint Youth Justice League.

The Research Specialist will oversee research projects conducted in the PPHI, including those funded by the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health. The Research Specialist will take a lead role in designing new interventions and/or studies, developing grant proposals, conducting data analyses, preparing manuscripts for conferences and publications, and directing research projects in PPHI. The Research Specialist will supervise students and research staff.

This position is a 12-month fixed-term appointment. Reappointment of position is contingent on funding and performance.

Required Degree

Doctorate- pediatrics, public health, environmental health, health policy, statistics, epidemiology, health psychology, or related field

Minimum Requirements

Qualified candidates will have a MD, PhD, or equivalent degree in public health, environmental health, statistics, epidemiology, health services research, health policy, psychology, or related discipline.

Desired Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated interest in public health, environmental health, trauma, health inequities/disparities, implementation/translation research, and/or longitudinal research.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Multiple peer-reviewed journal articles published or in press, including first-author article/s
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to design, conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues and interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated independence and ability to perform creative, high-quality research
  • Ability to organize and present reports to collaborators and sponsors
  • Experience writing successful federal and foundation grant proposals
