Position Summary

In this role, the incumbent will, on a daily basis, diagnose, treat, and manage clinical cases identified in the research colonies; assist with disease surveillance and prevention programs; participate in various activities to ensure compliance with local and federal regulations and guidelines; provide mentorship to student trainees on rotations; and assist the Director and Veterinary Staff with oversight and management of the clinical animal care and use program. Salary increase after passing ACLAM boards.



Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited School of Veterinary Medicine; postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine or one to three years of related experience that includes handling skills and diagnostic abilities specific to research animals; knowledge of Federal laws and regulations governing animal research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Veterinary license in at least one state with eligibility to include Michigan; and eligibility for Federal accreditation.


Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in laboratory animal specific practice with rodent medicine, breeding populations, and a variety
    of research models.
  • Experience working with principal investigators, research staff, animal care staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service-oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision making skills; aptitude for detailed work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Project management skills/experience.
  • USDA accredited veterinarian.
  • Advanced degree (M.S., Ph.D., M.P.H., etc.).
  • Strong interest in rodent health and preventive medicine programs.
  • Ability to advance professionally through effective job performance, contributions to the profession through research and scholarly
    work and involvement in regional or national professional organizations.
