The College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University seeks a Research Associate to fill a Postdoctoral position with the Dean’s Office and Public Philosophy Journal. This is a full-time 12-month position with an initial appointment period of 2 years with a start date in Spring 2021. This position works to support the Public Philosophy Journal and will conduct outreach to the academic community at MSU and beyond to support and promote the Collaborative Community Review process pioneered by PPJ. The successful candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, with a record of working with digital journals, peer review, and grant-funded projects. The position reports to the Dean of the College of Arts & Letters. Specifically, you will:
Work to support the operations of the Public Philosophy Journal in collaboration with other PPJ team members
Curate, edit, and post content to the PPJ and its various digital platforms
Collaborate with team members to guide the development of the Community Collaborative Review (CCR) platform
Coordinate peer review processes for PPJ
Monitor and review incoming submissions, copyedit and prepare accepted submissions for publication
Help with community outreach activities, identifying and inviting submissions, peer review, or other participation
Further job tasks include:
Identify content from across the web that resonates with the PPJ mission and style criteria
Help to develop content to be featured in the journal or on the PPJ website
Like, link, and share relevant content on PPJ social media
Grow the PPJ’s social media presence and leverage its community to produce and distribute content for the journal
Help to monitor incoming submissions, coordinate reviews, work with team members on conducting reviews, assist with identifying reviewers
Copyedit and prepare accepted manuscripts and comments for typesetting according to PPJ’s style (modified Chicago Manual of Style).
Monitor the website (landing page, information pages, the Journal) for any broken links, bugs, and aesthetic problems (e.g., language in need of editing, misplaced spaces, or images)
Help to identify and invite individuals and groups to participate in activities including; learning about the PPJ, submitting original work for formative, proposing topics for and/or guest editing special issues, building relationships with partner organizations

The demands of this job require that you have a combination of skills surrounding digital scholarly communications, peer review, outreach and engagement, and academic writing. You should have the facility to interact with both authors and community members and experience in editing. You should be confident in working with diverse populations and should understand the dynamics of working with academic journals and a university press. It is required that you:
Demonstrate a history of successful work with a digital journal, academic press, or other related areas
Have strong knowledge of the peer review and publishing process for academic journals
Are fluent in current and emerging issues in digital scholarly communication
Are an excellent communicator
Have experience working with and across disciplines
