Position Summary

Work includes all areas related to the Data Nuggets and Project Biodiversify grant entitled Collaborative Research: Diversifying and humanizing scientist role models to increase the impact of data literacy instruction on student interest and retention in STEM from the NSF IUSE program, with PI Dr. Marjorie Weber. Candidate is responsible for working with the team of researchers to develop educational materials, conduct an efficacy study, apply for IRB approval, recruit participants, identify and pilot assessment items, analyze and interpret data, and publish findings. Work involves weekly meetings with MSU and Auburn team members. Candidate also leads development of new, and maintains existing, Data Nuggets resources. This includes managing the website (http://datanuggets.org) and iteratively developing new activities. Candidate disseminates Data Nuggets and research findings by (1) attending and presenting at conferences, (2) holding workshops to train scientists in the development of Data Nuggets, (3) responding to user emails and feedback, and (4) maintaining the social media accounts and mailing list.

They will work closely with Dr. Ballen and Ash Zemenick, the PI and postdoctoral researcher, respectively at Auburn University who will develop Biodiversify materials to complement the Data Nuggets created under this proposal.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Plant Biology, Zoology, or EEBB

Minimum Requirements

Research experience in discipline based science education (DBER), specifically the candidate must have done previous research determining the efficacy of Data Nuggets educational resources. Candidate must have experience writing successful NSF IUSE proposal to support research and development of educational resources. Previous experience working remotely with a research team across a broad geographic range.

Desired Qualifications

Ability to work with undergraduate instructors to provide professional development surrounding topics such as the use of Data Nuggets in the classroom, data literacy, and quantitative reasoning. Ability to work with scientists to identify their science story to produce data-rich educational materials, and share the motivations behind their decision to pursue science and conduct research.
