Michigan State University Press seeks an energetic, motivated acquisitions editor in the humanities to build lists in some of its core areas: African studies, African American and Diaspora studies, Native American and Indigenous studies, environmental history and science, rhetoric and communications, Latino/a studies, politics and the global economy, and urban studies. Opportunities to develop new lists may be available. This full-time staff position reports to the editor-in-chief. The successful candidate will have education or job experience in some of these areas and be ready to craft creative strategies for acquiring new titles. This is an excellent opportunity for ambitious early-career editors.
Under the supervision of the editor-in-chief and in collaboration with series editors, the acquisitions editor will acquire and develop 16 to 20 new peer-reviewed, book-length projects per year to be published by the press. The editor will manage peer review, guide authors through revisions, negotiate with authors or agents, develop budgets and pursue publication subventions, present projects for consideration at the monthly acquisitions meeting and the editorial board, prepare manuscripts for transmittal, and collaborate with production and marketing staff. Circumstances permitting, the editor will travel to several professional conferences per year to meet with authors and represent the press. The editor will develop and maintain a broad familiarity with the significant literature in the areas of acquisition and keep current on trends in scholarly publishing, including in digital humanities and multimedia publication platforms.
Founded in 1947 as the scholarly publishing arm of the nation’s pioneer land-grant university, MSU Press publishes principally in the areas of the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, with special emphasis in African studies, African American and African Diaspora studies, Native American and Indigenous studies, American history and American studies, environmental history and science (particularly of the Great Lakes) and natural history, rhetoric and communications, Latino/a studies, politics and the global economy, and urban studies. The press currently issues 40 new titles a year (with a backlist of over 800 active titles) and publishes 13 journals.
