Position Summary

The Sexual Assault Healthcare Program Nurse Examiner will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to sexual assault patients.  This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings. 

  • Completes competency checklist while being observed by an experienced SANE
  • Provides direct medical-forensic care for patients presenting following sexual assault from the MSU community and the three surrounding counties (Ingham, Eaton and Clinton)
  • Provides comprehensive clinical care including repeat physical assessments, immunizations, medication administration, and photo documentation, as appropriate
  • Follows policies, procedures and protocols for the program
  • Participates in program staff meetings
  • Assists with routine clinic maintenance, such as stocking of clinic supplies and scheduling
  • Participates in quality measures, including peer review, continuing education, and orienting and precepting new team members
  • Assists with billing for individual exams
  • Assists with other operational duties as delegated by the Medical Director
  • 24 hours of continuing education annually, including 4 hours regarding the issues of sexual assault medical-forensic examinations
  • Maintains close working relationship with SANE medical director and members of other disciplines in the care of sexual assault patients
  • Provides court testimony as needed
  • Collect and accurately report program and grant-related data.
  • Complete other miscellaneous VOCA Grant, University, and program documentation as needed.
  • Completes other duties as specified and assigned.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in Nursing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. May require a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and/or work experience in a particular area of nursing or health care.

Desired Qualifications

English language proficiency; bilingual desired though not required; Three years minimum registered nursing experience in a hands-on patient care capacity; Ability to plan and organize, work autonomously; Excellent clinical assessment skills; Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in executing the roles and responsibilities of a nurse; Ability to work collaboratively with other clinicians and victim service responders.

This is an off dated position funded until 4/22/2021 from the date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
