Position Summary
MSU Office of Environmental Health & Safety is seeking an Industrial Hygienist for laboratory ventilation, design and air monitoring. This position will provide technical guidance for laboratory renovations, local exhaust ventilation and fume hoods for the University's 2000+ research labs. This position will work closely with the University’s Planning Design and Construction group to ensure new buildings and renovated spaces meet local, state and national codes, standards and best practices for laboratory safety. In addition, this position will be the point person in evaluating existing HVAC system performance and provide consultation to tradespersons to correct deficiencies. This position may require travel to off-campus facilities in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint. Applicants should have at least a BS in a science-oriented major and experience in industrial hygiene and/or HVAC experience in a health care or research setting. Experience using and referencing the ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual, ACGIH TLV book and the MIOSHA air contaminants table is a plus. Successful applicants will have demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with design and construction partners while ensuring safety codes and standards are met. Excellent service to a wide and diverse customer base a must.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or Toxicology; three to five years related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety and chemical safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and certification or eligibility to be certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene. Knowledge of Federal and State health/safety regulations as it applies to industrial ventilation systems.
Desired Qualifications
Applicants should have at least a BS in a science-oriented major industrial hygiene. Combination of education and experience in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology from an accredited college, with 5+ years experience in industrial, healthcare and/or laboratory ventilation considered. A strong background and understanding of building ventilation required, including local exhaust ventilation systems (fume hoods, biosafety cabinets). Applicants with experience in building automation systems such as Aircuity are encouraged to apply. Experience using and referencing the ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual, ACGIH TLV book and the MIOSHA air contaminants table is preferred. Successful applicants will have demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with design and construction partners while ensuring safety codes and standards are met. Ability to use web-based design construction productivity platform such as PlanGrid or PlanOn a plus.
