Position Summary
Michigan State University’s International Studies and Programs (ISP) is the hub for international research, teaching and outreach. As a university-level office under the leadership of a vice provost and dean, ISP supports international activities throughout the institution, working to mobilize MSU's research and scholarship, enhance study abroad and other educational programs, form and strengthen international partnerships, and welcome and support international visitors, scholars and students.
As a National Resource Center (for Pan Asia) under the US Department of Education's Title VI program, the Asian Studies Center (ASC) at Michigan State University directs one of the largest, most diverse programs of education about Asia in the Midwest. Unlike other programs, the Center is distinguished by its approach to East, Central, North, West, South, and Southeast Asia in the design of its curriculum, focus on faculty research, and outreach activities. Presently, the Center’s 240+ affiliated faculty members represent various academic departments in all of MSU's 17 colleges.
The Asian Studies Center collaborates closely with affiliates and specialists in various Departments and Colleges. The Center provides support to both undergraduate and graduate students through scholarships and a paper competition with awards for their pursuit of Asian language training, area studies, international studies, or the international aspects of professional studies.
ASN is searching for an Associate Director who will report to the Director and collaborate with other ASN staff in support of center initiatives. This is a 50% level of effort position funded for one year with the possibility of renewal based on funding. The incumbent will be expected to be in the office one to three days per week.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work with the Asian Studies Center Director and other Associate Director to support MSU activities in the four ISP thematic and other priority areas by connecting and convening key individuals and facilitating the establishment of platforms that can support thematically focused and cross-thematic strategic activities.
- In collaboration with the Asian Studies Center Director, lead and assist in the launching of the India initiative in ISP. This includes organizing the annual Global India Awards event, working with MSU’s India Council to support programming on India, and supporting and growing other India-focused activities at MSU.
- Develop initiatives and promote the development of grant proposals emerging from the activities of the Asian Studies Center and other Asia-related MSU entities. Coordinate the preparation and submission of grant proposals from ASN.
- Coordinate speakers, contracts, facilities, publicity, and budgets to develop and facilitate workshops, conferences, and programs aligned with priorities of Asian Studies.
- Under the supervision of the ASN Director, supervise duties of staff and student employees.
- Manage communications for the Asian Studies Center (website, social media, newsletter, briefing materials, etc.).
- Oversee maintenance of lists of Center-affiliated faculty and their research and teaching activities as they relate to Asia.
- Attend meetings on behalf of the Asian Studies Center Director.
- Develop agendas for visitors, liaise with the Dean’s Office and other ISP units and MSU colleges to ensure that visitors accomplish the objectives of their visit. Liaise with other ISP units to determine points of mutual interest regarding Asian engagement.
- Make presentations on the Asian Studies Center to internal and external constituents.

Required Degree
Masters -any field w/specialization relevant to Asia
Desired Degree
Doctorate -any field related to the position
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s degree in any field with a specialization relevant to Asia
- Demonstrated success in an administrative or leadership capacity, such as having successfully led collaborative research, educational or outreach activities
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external partnerships
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in a discipline relevant to the responsibilities of the position
- Knowledge of at least one Asian language
- First-hand experience with or in at least one country in Asia
