Position Summary
- Performs daily operations of the South Campus Anaerobic Digester Facility following established procedures to operate mechanical equipment associated with the anaerobic digester.
- Performs daily operations of the South Campus Composting Facility to create a value-added manure export.
- Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment associated with both facilities (dismantling, cleaning, and reassembly of parts).
- Assist with the coordination and scheduling of imported feedstocks and exported finished products.
- Assist with repairs and system improvements at the facilities.
- Assist with compiling, organizing and evaluating data to provide reports and operational status.
- Monitor supply inventory for both facilities.
- Clean and organize facility and equipment.
- Oversee and instruct students as necessary.
- Work with researchers and graduate students to implement projects to ensure coordination and compatibility with digester daily operations.
- Provide occasional tours and overview of general plant operational activities.
- Operate a payloader to move and load facility feedstocks and finished compost.
- Operate a truck with a snow plow.
- This position requires weekends, holidays, standby time, and overtime.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, subject to all weather conditions, in hot/cold, dusty and noisy areas.
- Work involves regular contact with livestock manure, food waste, and restaurant grease.
- Work includes viewing gauges and instruments, which involves visual acuity and color perception.
- Work involves bending, climbing, twisting, and regular lifting of 75 lbs.
- Work may involve wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) during emergency conditions.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
- One year of agricultural work experience required.
- Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary.
- Frequent lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
- Familiarity and ability to use common hand tools.
- Possession or attainment of an MSU forklift operator's permit prior to the completion of the applicable probation or trial period.
- Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
Desired Qualifications
- Three years of agricultural work desired
Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position:
- Familiarity and ability to use common hand tools
- Basic knowledge of the skilled trades
- Experience maintaining industrial equipment
- Basic knowledge of animal agriculture
- Knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, the ability to use e-mail and the Internet, the ability to utilize and create electronic spreadsheets for data collection, and development of a basic operational understanding of the anaerobic digester.
