Reuse and Recycling Collections Driver

Position Summary

Surplus Store & Recycling manages the collection and processing of 40 million pounds of reuse, recycling and waste materials annually for Michigan State University through a highest and best use model. This position will provide safe and responsive customer service through the operation of vehicles and equipment to collect and deliver refuse and recyclable materials to appropriate destinations.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • One year satisfactory experience in residential or commercial recycling or waste management operations.
  • Possession or attainment of an MSU forklift operator's permit prior to the completion of the applicable probation or trial period.
  • Requires possession of a valid Michigan Chauffeur Driver's License. Applicant must have a good driving record and submit their license number on their application form for a motor vehicle record check.
  • May require possession of a valid Michigan Group A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement and a valid medical certificate.
  • May require frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Work Hours

7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and may require after-hours, weekend, and holiday work.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting: Lifting and dumping recycling containers, materials, and waste from ground to truck and truck to ground - up to 75 lbs. frequently and more than 75 lbs. infrequently. Up to 4 hours a day.

Carrying: Carrying containers or waste from exterior to truck or during unloading - up to 75 lbs a distance of 200 ft. Up to 2 hours/day

Pushing/Pulling: Pushing carts of collection materials to truck or to exterior location - up to 300 lbs. a distance of 200 ft or more using carts and dollies. Up to 2 hours/day.

Climbing: Climbing on and off trucks and docks. Up to 1 hr/day.
