Position Summary

(Grand Rapids, MI)  Support and co-author scientific manuscripts, including designing and conducting the statistical analyses, generating publishable results, interpreting and discussing the findings within the Department of OBGYN at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine on the Women's Health Research team.  Serve as subject matter expert and first line for data issues and management.  Provide test analysis to test completeness and accuracy of data, report and troubleshoot data issues needing further support to data stewards of external organizations and work with them through resolution.  Collect historical and current data, analyze computer generated data and literature relevant to specific research studies or reports and maintain and link data from disparate sources, including Medicaid claims, vital records, census data and Healthy Start and Maternal Infant Health Program data into functional reporting databases. Construct variables needed for reporting and analysis, including those from Medicaid claims, vital records, census neighborhood-level, and other program variables.  Prepare descriptive statistics with reports on data accuracy and missing data issues and conduct quasi-experimental analyses (e.g., propensity score models).  Organize and establish project codebooks and protocols necessary for data management.  Collaborate with external constituencies.  Maintain up to date knowledge on coding classification standards used in administrative healthcare data (e.g., ICD-9/ICD-10), and from healthcare agencies (e.g., AHRQ, HEDIS). 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's degree in Health Outcomes Research, Statistics, Biostatistics or Mathematics and three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience working with large data sets, including Medicaid claims and specific knowledge of Medicaid claims data in terms of billing codes, eligibility, and diagnoses/procedure code systems (ICD-10/ICD-9, HCPCS/CPT) and revenue codes, census data experience in advanced data management (SQL-based database pulls) and statistical training (biostatistical and econometric methods in SAS, R) required,  or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Desired Qualifications

  • Expertise in maternal and child health and health equity. 
  • Ability to work independently, strong reporting skills for reports and publications, effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Proficiency working with large data sets including Medicaid claims, vital record, and census data, and electronic medical records.  Abilities to link data from multiple data sources.
