Position Summary

The Office of Research and Innovation supports MSU’s research and creative activity by administering research funding, ensuring research integrity for both faculty and students, providing grant support services, fostering collaboration, licensing university inventions, and overseeing regulatory compliance.

Under the MSU Strategic Plan 2030, the research enterprise is preparing for significant growth in key research thrusts. This position will assist in the grant support services area by working with faculty on large grant proposal submissions, particularly interdisciplinary or multi-institutional grants.

The Academic Specialist – Outreach (grant editor and consultant) will specifically provide MSU faculty members with consulting and editing services to support the development of successful grant proposals primarily for federal agencies, including NIH and NSF. The ideal candidate must be well-versed in the current agency policies and initiatives and able to offer advice that aligns with the federal expectations and priorities. The specialist must be able to work with researchers from the natural and life sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, and physical sciences with the goal to help researchers in developing competitive Broader Impacts plans and activities, in collaboration with specialists in MSU’s University Outreach and Engagement (UOE) office. The individual will also be expected to conduct webinars, panel discussions and other workshops on grant development and meet with faculty in small and large group settings.

Remote friendly: The consultant may work remotely but must be available on campus as required to fulfill position responsibilities. The consultant must also be available to conduct phone or video conferences during normal business hours (eastern time zone) when not on campus. MSU will cover costs for travel between campus and any location in the continental United States along with hotel stays in East Lansing when on site. Employee is responsible for other expenses while traveling and on site.

Required Degree

Doctorate -a Science field

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in a Science field
  • 3 years experience writing and/or editing grant proposals
  • Extensive experience with research within a university setting
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong individual initiative
  • Able to attend federal granting agency conferences
  • Experience writing or editing NIH and/or NSF proposals and be open to learning about priorities and requirements of other agencies as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with individuals seeking funding across a range of disciplines, including the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Must possess effective skills for engaging with a broad diversity of individuals.
