Position Summary

The Cropping Systems Agronomy program ( in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University is hiring a Research Assistant II. This position will support field and laboratory research and extension programming in crop productivity, profitability, and resiliency in Michigan farming systems. The overarching program goal is to develop agronomic recommendations for corn, soybean, and winter wheat based cropping systems. The individual will interact with other individuals including professors, research assistants, graduate, and undergraduate students at Michigan State University. This is a multifaceted position that includes field and laboratory research, data management and reports, and some presentation responsibilities.


Primary duties of the position include field preparation, planting, in-season crop management, and harvesting of research and variety testing field sites; data collection, compilation, analysis, and publication in various sources; communication of research results to stakeholders; operation and maintenance of research equipment; and supervision/training of hourly and student employees.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.


Desired Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in Agronomy or related field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating and repairing field research equipment with auto-guidance and variable rate technologies
  • Experience in conducting plant science experiments in the field; managing cropping systems based on corn, soybean, and small grain crops
  • Skills in designing experiments and analyzing data in AGROBASE, SAS, R, and/or other similar statistical programs
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. Experience in scientific writing and communication of results to scientific and farming community
  • Experience managing and supervising employees
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs on analytical and field experimental equipment; interpret manuals, lab procedures and pesticide labels

A Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy, Crop and Soil Sciences, or closely related discipline; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in managing cropping systems, field research techniques, operating and maintaining field research and farm equipment, proficiency with Microsoft Office computer programs, organization and maintenance of research data; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators license is required within one month of hire. A Michigan Commercial Driver’s License with “Group A” designation is required within three months of hiring.
