The College of Education at Michigan State University seeks a Data Steward with curiosity, creativity, focus, and attention to detail to assist in supporting student success and inclusive excellence within the College’s academic programs. This position reports to the Director of College Data and Analytics and will serve as the team lead for data analysts. The individual will be working closely and collaboratively with the extended data analytics team as well as academic program leaders and staff throughout the college.
The successful candidate will have strong technical, data, analytics, document management, and project management skills to lead, coordinate, implement and support data reporting and data visualization solutions; develop and manage Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) processes; leading work to develop reports and service ad-hoc data requests querying against a variety of data sources; create dashboards and data visualizations for data sets; analyze complex datasets and vet report results; and engage in the development of quantitative and qualitative research projects.
In addition, the candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage in requirement gathering and business analysis processes, effectively convey findings and broad trends to a variety of audiences and positively influence College of Education leadership and faculty. Additionally, the candidate will be able to clearly articulate findings to non-technical audiences, write data summary reports for different audiences, creating a communication plan for disseminating data. The ideal candidate will also present the ability to function well in a team environment and engage in the work of interdisciplinary teams as appropriate to pursue opportunities.
This position will be responsible for supervise and mentor data analysts; manage student positions and interns as needed.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Educational Administration, Statistics, Economics or Research Methodology; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Recent PhD graduates with a degree in measurement and quantitative methods, data science, engineering, a social science discipline, higher education, or related field including other doctoral or advanced degrees with a strong quantitative emphasis; Five to eight years’ experience in data analysis, business analysis, or program analysis with a focus on higher education.
Programming experience with SQL, Oracle R, Python, SAS, SPSS etc., data extraction, reporting and visualization tools (SQL Server Reporting Services, Power BI, Tableau, Power Query etc.), ETL processes, automation tools (power automate etc.), experience in data mining, data science, data management, and analysis; proven experience in project management
Knowledge of university administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research-oriented roles; Familiarity with MSU student and business IT systems; proven ability to manage complex projects and meet multiple deadlines. Experience working in higher education or with researchers; basic familiarity and experience with qualitative data collection methods including interviews and focus groups; experience working with and supervising students; effective organizational, time management, and project management skills; application and demonstration of proficiency with standard industry software/programs, Master's in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Educational Administration, Statistics, Economics or Research Methodology with coursework or specialization in an area related to the duties to be performed; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an area of specialization related to the duties to be performed; must have experience with database programming (SQL, Oracle etc.) and visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI etc.); experience with research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software and programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
