Position Summary

MSU is Hiring a Research Associate Data Manager

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatics at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Associate Data Manager to assist with the CHARM study. This position will be an opportunity to support research meant to impact maternal and child health in Michigan. This project, Child Health Advances through Research with Mothers, is a state-wide study involving scientists from MSU, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. CHARM is also a part of the national research effort ECHO, Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes.

Scientists have made slow progress in preventing babies from being born prematurely, minimal progress in preventing birth defects and cerebral palsy, and virtually no progress in preventing children from developing autism, or intellectual disability. We think that this lack of adequate progress is partly because we are missing a comprehensive, prospective assessment of how the total pregnancy experience shapes the short- and long-term health of mothers and children and the risks of these conditions. A carefully studied pregnancy cohort can address this problem.

Position Summary: The research associate will support the study PIs, Dr. Jean Kerver and Dr. Nigel Paneth in data preparation, participant data management, and data analyses. The research associate will report to the CHARM Project Director and work in the MSU Study Office. The successful candidate will have experience with large and complex data sets, preferably health related data.

First the candidate will be responsible for the following data manager activities:

  • Develop and maintain databases for two longitudinal cohort studies with data created from multiple sources
  • Maintain sample management system that includes a front-end user interface for project staff daily work
  • Update, merge, clean, and score study data on a regular basis
  • Create data sets for investigator hypotheses and analyses
  • At the request of investigators and staff, analyze study data for research paper and grant applications
  • Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants on data management procedures
  • Document data storage procedures that follow MSU Human Research guidelines
  • Upload data quarterly to the ECHO national platform

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on data from several large epidemiological studies (e.g., ARCH, MARCH, ECHO) and gain experience in study design, data collection, analyses and publication.
