Position Summary

 The School of Packaging (SoP) at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking a highly motivated research associate/postdoctoral researcher to evaluate packaging systems' environmental footprint and develop innovative new compostable polymeric composite. The researcher will be working on several research projects supervised by Dr. Rafael Auras, and the research work is highly trans-disciplinary. The candidate will require to conduct streamlined and full life cycle assessment (LCA) of packaging systems. The candidate will also work on developing compostable multilayer polymer structures and composites with high oxygen and water properties and assess their biodegradation. The projects are conducted in collaboration with industry partners and national labs. The candidate is expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students, provide required lab training and occasional lectures. The position is initially as a one-year appointment with extension available depending on satisfactory performance and continued funding availability.

Required Degree

Doctorate -material science and technology, packaging

Minimum Requirements

  1. Expertise in streamlined or full life cycle assessment methodologies and the use of software to conduct LCA.
  2. Expertise in polymer processing and characterization.
  3. Expertise with advanced analytical techniques such as XRD, DSC, SEM, TEM, AFM, TGA, DMA, NMR, GPC, rheology, surface characterization, and vapor and gases barrier assessment.
  4. Expertise in the determination of compostability of products according to the US and the European requirements.
  5. Expertise in multivariate data analysis including statistical software such as JMP, SAS or Minitab, MatlabĀ®, and project management.
