Refrigeration Supervisor

Position Summary

This position will will supervise the Building Services - Maintenance Services - Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Water Treatment with direct supervision of skilled trades Refrigeration (and Air Conditioning) mechanics, Water Treatment Mechanics and other skilled trades crews as necessary. Oversees inspection, repair, preventative maintenance, operation, calibration, installation and safety requirements for campus refrigeration, air conditioning, and treated water systems: including but not limited to air cooled and water cooled chillers including absorption chillers, direct expansion cooling systems, variable refrigerant systems, refrigeration equipment such as coolers, freezers and ice machines, cooling towers, closed loop heating and cooling systems water treatment, pools and hot/cold tubs; recruit, hire, evaluate, and train staff; enforce federal, university and departmental policies and procedures; resolve employee complaints and grievances; communicate with management to discuss projects and staffing and resolve problems; work with administrators, unit business leaders and internal and external customers to discuss operations; work with union representatives to manage labor relations issues by discussing contract administration, inquiries, grievances and general information; manage project budget's and schedules; assist in reviewing departmental budgets and develop financial projections and expenditures of funds; participate in long-range planning for departmental operations; participate and contribute to construction standard change process; respond to emergencies, inquiries and complaints from campus customers; inspect and assess problems, damage, and condition of campus facilities to facilitate repair and address safety concerns; estimate job requirements and costs; serve as a steward of university assets and resources. Must be able to demonstrate a willingness to build good relationships through developing strong interpersonal skills to achieve objectives through mutual participation.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational, trade or business school with coursework Coursework in the HVAC/R trade; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervising operational activities related to building maintenance and repair of HVAC/R systems, including water treatment operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of State of Michigan Mechanical Contractors license in HVAC, Refrigeration, or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Service within one year of employment; possession of EPA Section 608 Universal Certification within one year of employment; possession of State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certification (Category 5A or 5B) within one year of employment; possession of a valid State of Michigan vehicle operator's license; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of and experience with water treatment chemicals analysis; experience with operation of large chillers (70 tons and above) and central chiller plants; experience with labor relations practices; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel); excellent customer relations skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team; excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task yet give attention to detail with frequent interruptions; ability to handle confidential issues with complete discretion; self-starter who possesses good decision-making skills and demonstrated ability to follow-through; desire for continuous learning.

Work Hours

NON-STANDARD/VARIABLE WORK HOURS: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and may require after-hours, weekend and holiday work. During peak workloads, overtime may be necessary.

Summary of Health Risks
