Position Summary

This position involves assisting with field and laboratory activities related to management and control of forest insects, particularly hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA).  The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate and communicate with the PI, personnel from local, state and federal agencies involved in the Michigan HWA program, and property owners.  Duties include visiting field sites in west Michigan to sample hemlock trees treated between 2017 and 2020 with systemic insecticides, evaluating HWA presence/infestation level, and preparing shoot and foliage samples in the laboratory for residue analysis.  Other activities may include entering, maintaining and compiling data from this project, ordering and maintaining field and laboratory supplies/ equipment, assisting with supervision of undergraduate or graduate students working on related projects, and assisting with data summaries and report preparation. Some activities will require working under mildly difficult weather conditions. Works hours are typically 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and variable; some overnight travel may occasionally be needed.  

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

The position requires a B.S. degree in, forestry, natural resources, entomology, biology, or related field; driver’s license and good driving record; ability to navigate in forested areas using maps, handheld GPS and compass; up to six months of work experience with projects related to forestry, entomology or related fields; familiarity with data entry, management and compilation using excel software; experience with word processing and presentation software; ability to communicate and cooperate with land managers, HWA program personnel, property owners, supervisors and other members of the forest entomology laboratory; strong organizational skills and able to maintain and track high numbers of samples, along with managing supplies and maintaining equipment.

Desired Qualifications

Ability and willingness to work independently in the field under adverse weather conditions and in the laboratory; able to perform meticulous and tedious tasks accurately and follow detailed procedures; familiarity with GPS, basic GIS and mapping; basic data management and analysis skills; ability to identify forest trees to genus or species level and to conduct basic tree measurements; able to assist with management of student assistants in the field and laboratory.

Description of End Date
