Position Summary

Provides leadership and oversight of local programs, clients and participants, related to MSU Extension (MSUE) Health work team and as part of the Health & Nutrition Institute (HNI); the position includes delivering social-emotional and community behavioral health education in the county; oversees and ensures program/project promotion and expansion activities; assists with data gathering for impact evaluation efforts; and works in conjunction with supervisor, program participants and community partners to attain both short-term and long-term goals and objectives. Through supervisor, works in concert with the MSUE Health & Nutrition Institute and the MSUE Health work team to ensure alignment of programs with overall goals of work team, Institute and Organization.

Community-based and online programs this position may implement in the local community include Stress Less with Mindfulness, RELAX: Alternatives to Anger, Mindful Educators, and other one-time presentations available from MSU Extension that are research- and evidence-based. The person in this position will receive training to implement and evaluate the programs.



  • Plan, organize and implement programs that are relevant to program area and meet the needs of local residents, including recruiting of program clients/participants.
  • Collaborate with the MSU Extension Health work team and Health & Nutrition Institute.
  • Provide expertise and information to clientele related to program area.
  • Provide information and opportunities for learning through the use of technology, mass media, group meetings, workshops and individual contacts.
  • Operate somewhat independently, with minimal supervision, ensuring that program delivery follows prescribed guidelines and meets the goals for reaching specific audiences.
  • Attend various and related local program meetings or committee meetings, as well as community planning activities, as appropriate.
  • Represent MSU Extension in activities, meetings, etc. in a manner that reflects collegial connection with the community, the research and knowledge of the University, and the goodwill of MSU Extension.
  • Reach a diverse audience through traditional and newly developed programs.
  • Actively participate in a variety of professional development opportunities to attain and retain program knowledge and delivery skills.
  • Has an understanding and commitment to equal access and opportunity and to diversity and inclusivity.
  • Understands and implements Civil Rights policies and compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, human development and family studies or related field.
  • Knowledge and at least two years of experience in program delivery within community-based settings providing health education to diverse populations.
  • Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Proficient computer operation skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.
  • Travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long distance and overnight travel is required as a regular part of this position.
  • Transportation is the responsibility of the employee.
  • Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities, including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences.
  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.

Desired Qualifications


  • Awareness and knowledge of Cooperative Extension health education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation and evaluation.

Special Instructions

This position is a full-time, end-dated appointment renewable annually based upon successful performance and continued funding.

Work Hours
