Position Summary

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) (www.animalhealth.msu.edu), College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University (MSU), is seeking applicants for a specialist position in Endocrinology.  This position is in the University’s Academic Specialist Continuing Appointment System.  A complete description of the MSU Academic Specialist system is available at: https://www.hr.msu.edu/policies-procedures/faculty-academic-staff/academic-specialist-handbook/index.html.

The VDL is a full-service, AAVLD-accredited laboratory and occupies a state-of-the-art facility comprising over 152,000 sq. feet of space. The Endocrinology Section has a long history of excellence and innovation, receiving over 9,100 samples per month and offering assays to assess thyroid, adrenal, parathyroid, reproductive, pancreatic, pituitary, and gastric function in multiple species.  The individual filling this position will join the team within the Endocrinology Section of VDL and can anticipate collaboration with a diverse group of microbiologists, pathologists, toxicologists, and nutritionists.

Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and be eligible for Michigan Veterinary Licensure. Experience in the interpretation of results from analytical assays in the context of animal disease is required – experience with endocrine testing is preferred. Advanced study related to endocrinology or relevant board certification is helpful but not required.  We are seeking an individual who is committed to understanding laboratory diagnosis of endocrine disorders and to providing excellent professional service to internal and external clients. The successful candidate will be part of the VDL team and have responsibility for a portion of the VDL service/outreach activities, including extension activities in coordination with the VDL communications manager. The primary responsibility of this position will be to interpret endocrinology test results of domestic and exotic animals, and to provide consultation to referring veterinarians (e.g., appropriate test or sample selection, test interpretation, diagnostic procedures).  Other duties, dependent on candidate qualifications and interests, may include developing new tests, validation of endocrinology tests to meet accreditation standards, and participation in aligned research projects. Participation in teaching (professional and graduate students, residents) is also possible.  Excellent written and especially verbal communication skills, including cultural competence, are required as this role includes frequent communication with referring veterinarians, the public, other VDL faculty, staff, and students.

Michigan State University has outstanding college-based and university-wide basic and translational research programs that provide ample opportunity for collaborative research with faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and with those of the two human medical schools on campus. Additional opportunities for collaboration exist close by at the University of Michigan, the Van Andel Research Institute, and other research centers. Intramural funding for research projects is excellent and available through a competitive research grant program in the College of Veterinary Medicine. A mentoring program is available to assist junior faculty in their professional development.
