Position Summary

The Department of Psychology at Michigan State University is seeking to hire a Research Associate to join our systems change research and intervention team. This team, led by Dr. Pennie Foster-Fishman, conducts research and evaluation to better understand how to transform community systems to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable populations. The team also provides training and technical assistance to support communities in their transformative systems change pursuits.  Overall, the work of the System exChange team at Michigan State University focuses on improving education, health, and economic outcomes for children, youth and families by creating more responsive community systems, targeting social determinants of health, and pursuing equity in opportunities and outcomes.

The MSU team approaches systems change using a model based on the premise that communities can achieve transformative results when they: make local system and community conditions the intentional targets of their change initiatives; pursue the effective implementation of their efforts; and build a community engagement infrastructure that supports real-time learning and action across diverse stakeholders and sectors.  For more information, visit

The successful candidate will have experience leading qualitative research and evaluation projects.  This position will be involved in all phases of research: planning and coordinating goals and research projects, performing research, analyzing data, and producing documentation and reports on findings.

Responsibilities include:

80%:  Design and conduct research activities

  • Play a central role in evaluation design

  • Design and conduct interviews and focus groups with community stakeholders

  • Ensure technical quality control over assigned research, evaluation, and other services or tasks

  • Manage projects and tasks

  • Organize and analyze complex data, summarize and present findings

20%: Report on findings

  • Write and produce reports and presentations for funders, practitioners, and the general public

Required Degree

Doctorate -Public Health, Public Policy, Psychology

Minimum Requirements

PhD in public health, public policy, health psychology, community psychology, along with intersectional studies, research, and academic interests in health disparities in the United States; health promotion, intervention or prevention; social determinants of health; and community-level health interventions and policies or related fields will be considered.


Desired Qualifications

  • Strong experience evaluating strategies that use place-based, systems change, or environmental approaches for addressing health disparities, community development, economic equity, or systems of care for children and families
  • Demonstrated proficiency in qualitative data analysis
  • Experience with qualitative analysis tools like nVivo or MaxQDA or similar
  • Analysis skills, including ability to maintain quality control over the use of computer analysis tools
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Experience training and supervising students in qualitative methods
