Position Summary

Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science Program, is seeking a research assistant to work in the Forensic Biology Laboratory to assist with ongoing research projects, data analysis, and report writing, to help initiate new research projects, to assist with forensic casework, and to help oversee laboratory materials, supplies, and equipment. The position will be under the supervision of the laboratory PI. Evaluation of the research assistant’s performance will be completed jointly by the laboratory PI and the Director of the School of Criminal Justice. This is an off-date position funded until June 30, 2019 with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.   

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be required by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in forensic biology and molecular genetics; experience with the following procedures: DNA isolation and purification, DNA quantification (qPCR), end point PCR, Sanger (di-deoxy) sequencing and result analysis, mtDNA sequencing and result analysis, nuclear DNA STR typing and result analysis, and next-generation (Ilumina) DNA prep, sequencing, and result analysis; conducting analysis of data from these procedures; conducting statistical analysis of DNA data; report writing; initiating and maintaining chain of custody; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

MS or higher degree in related field.
