Position Summary

The ComArtSci Outreach Specialist will work with the Associate Dean for Research, and the Director of HRCC, coordinate, and execute specific activities based upon desired outcomes, accordingly.  Specific initiative/program desired outcomes will be provided from each Director; however, general expectations of each are provided below.

College Initiatives (including Trifecta) expectations (50%):

The Office for Research (O4R) at the College of Communications Arts and Sciences works to support academic and creative works in the college. This support has both a research and academic compliance component and a fostering and supportive component. The compliance component is highly important and should supersede all other tasks. The fostering and supportive component includes the Trifecta Initiative which overlaps with the HRCC. 

The Trifecta Initiative is a research initiative launched by Michigan State University’s Colleges of Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS), Engineering (EGR), and Nursing (NUR). “Trifecta” usually means successfully betting on the first three winners in a horse race. In this case, the Trifecta Initiative is three colleges – CAS, EGR, and NUR - that have joined forces to maximize interdisciplinary research collaboration. The mission of the Initiative is to foster and enhance research collaborations in order to reduce health disparities by developing applied innovations that improve health outcomes and the organization and delivery of health services through new communication and engineering technologies.

College Initiatives (including the Trifecta Initiative) expectations (50%):

  • Support planning, tracking, and promotion of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) sessions – a requirement for Graduate Students in the college.

  • Maintain ComArtSci O4R and Trifecta websites (content only, no coding required) 

  • Communication of ComArtSci and Trifecta Initiative dates, timelines, and requirements.

  • Develop materials for ComArtSci O4R and Trifecta including, but not limited to: one-page briefings, fliers, social media content, website content, monthly updates, listserv, as well as providing editing of content for grant submissions

  • Plan, communicate, and disseminate relevant information that will enhance collaboration between various collaborators in efforts to use technology and communication tools to develop applied innovation to improve health care, outcomes, and disparities.

  • Provide support to associate dean for research including, but not limited to scheduling, travel coordination, etc.

  • Identify, curate, and share information about federal and foundation funding calls

  • Contribute to agenda development for leadership meetings, as well as O4R meetings

  • Coordinate and plan event activities and logistics (both for college research and Trifecta Initiative events)

  • Maintain archive of communications, materials, logistical documents, contacts, agendas, etc.

  • Coordinate space tracking in the college (e.g. reserving joint research labs, meeting rooms).

  • Coordinate with ComArtSci communications office in finding research stories from graduate students and faculty in the college.

The Health and Risk Communication Center (HRCC) serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research connections, provides methodological resources (such as surveys, focus groups, message production and statistical analysis), and serves as a go-to for specialized knowledge and expertise on all aspects of the health and environment risk communication process. The HRCC work with professionals outside the college, advising medical organizations, local and state government, and non-governmental organizations on a variety of health and risk related issues.

HRCC expectations (50%) – bolded items are highest priority:

  • Support all operational aspects of Center, to include: assisting director with planning, , managing research fellowships, etc.
  • Lead HRCC communication activities, especially website updates and proactive communications (including listserv and email management)
  • Assist with grant and project proposal development, including narrowing funding searches by reading requests for proposals and reviewing content.
  • Initiate and coordinate advisory board activities
  • Lead operational aspects of yearly survey in coordination with Research Core (HP2 survey – promoting the survey)
  • Assist with the educational mission of the center especially related to online certificate, and/or online course offerings related to existing programs.
  • Support and coordination of Research Core activities and communication among core faculty
  • Interface with external groups and attend meetings on behalf of Director
  • Lead HRCC branding efforts including maintaining intellectual/content of website and all promotional materials, ensure boilerplate is up to date and be able to connect affiliate faculty with resources.
  • Documentation and collection of HRCC (and core) deliverables, monitoring and evaluation of center activities; write annual report with appendices
  • Advertise and recruit for Iris Scholars translational scholarship program; set and manage Iris Scholars work schedules; meet with faculty to promote Iris Scholars involvement
  • Assist with center activities as needed
  • Assist HRCMA program with organization of alumni event(s)
  • Assist with creation of HRC Repository and help manage HRC repository  (monitor faculty activity that could be part of repository, field email requests and troubleshooting requests about repository)

Bachelors -Communications or related field

Desired Degree

Masters -Communications or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in communications or related field.
  • One year experience with research and funding processes and institutions.
  • Traits of a successful candidate include: independent worker, self-motivated, detail oriented, adaptable, excellent organization skills, reliable, effective and efficient problem solver, ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous projects, ability to communicate well with diverse audiences – especially MSU faculty, graduate students, and administrative leadership.

 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in communications or related field.
  • Adobe InDesign. Highly proficient with: Microsoft office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent written and verbal communication.
