Position Summary

The mission of the OPA is to enhance the value and impact of the MSU postdoctoral experience, whether appointed a postdoctoral fellow, research associate, or research assistant professor, through consistent, thoughtful, and comprehensive policy development. The OPA was created to recognize the key role that postdocs play in the research and educational mission of our institution and their unique professional development needs. The position encompasses the following goals and responsibilities:

  • In concert with the Graduate School and relevant university experts, determine needs and develop a comprehensive program of professional, ethical and managerial skill acquisition designed to prepare postdocs for the next step in their careers
  • Foster community building in collaboration with the MSU Postdoctoral Association (PDA)

  • Develop a process for recommending and implementing institutional policies (e.g., unified and postdoc-specific grievance policy, minimum salary guidelines tied to national standards, among others)

  • Work with institutional leaders to review hiring, onboarding, and reappointment processes and recommend changes that will advance diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Work with institutional leaders to develop consistent policies and practices across programs for the creation and tracking of postdoctoral trainees’ progress through Individual Development Plans

  • Develop a process for tracking postdoc outcomes and success
  • Manage MSU postdoc communications

  • Develop and implement a Responsible Conduct of Research Program for postdocs
  • Provide strategic oversight of the MSU PDA
  • Work with the Office of International Students and Scholars to help with immigration compliance and related concerns of international postdocs

  • Advise and support units and programs applying for postdoctoral training grants
  • Promote gift opportunities for postdoctoral fellowships through University Advancement

Required Degree

Doctorate

Minimum Requirements

  • A doctoral degree
  • Experience administering cross-campus programs
  • Experience with personnel supervision, management and development
  • Experience with career and professional development
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills

  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Experience in leadership positions associated with postdoctoral career and professional development
  • Advocacy experience
  • Ability to interpret and apply policy in an academic setting
  • Experience working with international scholars
  • Experience with data management
  • Knowledge about effective use of social media
